ACM

Association for Computing Machinery is the world’s largest computing society, connecting students, educators, and professionals to advance computing through networking, career development, and access to leading research. With members worldwide, ACM supports diverse interests through chapters, conferences, and its Digital Library, while promoting inclusivity, ethics, and innovation in the field.

Established in 2023, our chapter is a vibrant community of University of Patras students passionate about technology, coding, and innovation. We aim to connect, inspire, and empower members through learning, collaboration, and impactful projects. Join us as we shape the future together!

Chairs

Michael Mitsainas – Chair

Mike is the Chair of the Chapter, being a member for several years he holds both the knowledge and experience to effectively lead the team

Argiris Sofotasios – Vice Chair

Argyris Sofotasios is a Computer Engineering and Informatics graduate of the University of Patras (CEID), with academic and research interests in Distributed and Parallel Algorithms, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and Machine Learning (ML). He has gained experience through projects involving the development of predictive models with deep learning techniques, the design of distributed communication protocols, the orchestration of node networks using Docker and Kubernetes, as well as the parallelization of big data preprocessing methods and training of models in distributed ML applications. He has completed his mandatory military service and is currently collaborating with the Computer Engineering Laboratory of CEID. In addition to his academic background, he has a distinguished athletic record in taekwondo, having ranked 5th at the Youth Olympic Games and earned the title of European Junior Champion.

Orestis AntMakris – Founder & Mentor

Orestis Antonis Makris is the Founder and Mentor of the ACM Student Chapter at the University of Patras. As the Chapter’s first Chair, he helped establish and grow the newly build community, leading initiatives and events. Now a graduate, he will continue to support the Chapter as a mentor, offering guidance to the executive body and empowering the next generation of members.

Giorgos Kandilas – Treasurer

Giorgos Kandilas is an Executive of the ACM Student Chapter at the University of Patras and the Coordinator of the Cybersecurity Special Interest Group (SIG). With a deep passion for Computer Science and a particular focus on Cybersecurity, he works to introduce students to the field through engaging presentations, events, and collaborative learning. Dedicated to both personal growth and community impact, he aims to foster curiosity, share knowledge, and inspire peers to explore the evolving world of cybersecurity.

Elena Michalarogianni – PR

Helena Michalarogianni is the PR Executive of the ACM Student Chapter at the University of Patras. Since taking on this role in February, she has actively promoted the Chapter both on social media and within the university community. Her contributions include managing social media content, designing promotional materials as the team’s graphics coordinator, and helping organize and execute various events. Now in her 4th year of studies in Computer Engineering and Informatics, Helena continues to support the Chapter by expanding her knowledge in key areas, with the goal of helping the team grow and contributing to the success of future initiatives.

Dimitris Metaxakis – Web Master

Dimitris Metaxakis earned his degree in Computer Engineering and Informatics from the University of Patras and is currently a PhD candidate in the same department. His research interests include High Performance Computing (HPC), with an emphasis on Artificial Intelligence applications, Deep Learning, and Automated Machine Learning (AutoML). As a member of the HPCLab, he has contributed to research projects on the design and development of efficient AI systems and algorithms. He is also actively involved in the ACM Student Chapter of the University of Patras.
